First Steps to Working Online in the midst of COVID-19

— Transforming Organizations, Revitalizing Communities and Developing Human Potential

You’re a contractor or small business owner, and suddenly everything is now online, and all you have is wifi and a laptop? Here are some things to consider as you are going remote:

  1. What device will you/ you audience use primarily? Smartphone, laptop, tablet? Make sure the tools you choose are compatible.

  2. What kind of tool[s] do you need? Do you need just a communication platform? Or a collaborative document suite and online payment system like Stripe or PayPal?

  3. What tool[s] are your employer/ university/ audience currently using? Find out what is already in use in your system/ client base/ organization - there is no point in making folks learn something new in a time like this when they have a tool already.

  4. What tool[s] are you knowledgeable in/comfortable with?

Examples of tools you might consider include,

  • Video Conference Communication: Zoom, GoToMeeting, WebEx, …

  • Teamwork/Project Mgt. Platforms: Slack, Trello, Asana, Monday, …

  • Cloud-based documents: GoogleDocs, Microsoft Teams, …

  • LMS: Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, …

When in doubt, we recommend you start with free Zoom and Google Docs accounts. For more, check out ZOOM’s BLOG: https://blog.zoom.us/wordpress/2020/03/09/working-from-home-tips-to-meet-like-a-pro/
